What is Concrete Polishing

Concrete polishing is very similar to sanding wood. When sanding wood, sandpaper is used to remove small imperfections and make the wood smoother. Polishing concrete is much the same with the exception that instead of using sandpaper, you use a concrete diamond polisher. The concrete diamond polishers have diamond polishing discs in varying grits, not unlike sandpaper, that are used in sequence in several stages of polishing to achieve the level of polish required.

To help densify polished concrete surfaces, penetrating hardeners / densifiers are applied to the concrete, normally after the first step of the grinding process. These products, which can be applied to new or existing floors, work by creating a chemical reaction with the concrete to form a dense crystalline structure, in essence tightening the concrete, making it less penetrable to water & liquids.

For an extremely high-gloss finish, a final grit of 1500 or 3000 may be used. Our experienced polishing crews know when to switch to the next-finer grit by observing the floor surface and the amount of material being removed. During the final polishing step, a commercial polishing compound is sometimes used to give the floor a mirror finish.

Concrete Candidates to be Polished

Almost any structurally sound concrete floor, whether new or old, can be polished. But there are some exceptions.

For newly poured floors, the floor should be in place a minimum 28 days before polishing to provide for adequate curing. Some retail and warehouse facilities that plan to polish their floors after placement may specify the installation of a steel troweled concrete finishes potentially lessening the polishing steps required.

All floors typically require some method of surface preparation prior to polishing to remove dirt, grease, coatings, or blemishes. Floors that need extensive patching, or are extremely porous & pitted may not be good candidates for polishing. An onsite inspection of your concrete is always necessary to properly evaluate the concrete conditions.
